Medical Image Samples

Introduction

This repository is not intended to collect huge series of images, but only these files that may emphasize some structural or anatomic differences. I have been collecting them for testing purposes during the development of my own medical image reader (thanks to all contributors). I hope they might be useful for you too.

I make no copyright claim to the reproduction or enhancements to these images. It is your responsibility to use these images lawfully.

I tried to anonymize these files when needed by renaming all names (VR=PN) and removing all elements from the Patient Identification Group (0x0010), all private elements (odd groups), all overlays and curves (when needed), comments (element 0x4000) and some ID's. UID's where not re-computed. I know it's a bit rude, but I'll improve this feature later (and regenerate the files).

Every entry describes a file by its name, its graphical contents (as a small thumbnail) and some of its main features: type, transfer syntax, modality (and optional secondary image type), photometric interpretation (and optional planar configuration), size (rows x columns), binary structure (where "[x, y | z]" means "x bits stored, y bits allocated and high bit z") and Pixel Representation, manufacturer, model name (and software version).

  • Click (or Shift-Click) on Download to download the corresponding compressed file.
  • Click on Tags to list the tags contained in the file.
  • Click on Initial location to jump to the initial location of that file.

The thumbnail and list of tags were generated/anonymized using dicom2, my free medical image converter (except some JPEG encapsulated Encapsulated files XA-MONO2-8-catheter and MR-MONO2-16-12-0-shoulder).

All files have been compressed using gzip. Windows 95/NT users may use WinZip to uncompress them, or the standard Unix method: gzip -d file.gz

Transfer Syntax

DICOM Part 5 : "Transfer Syntax: (Standard and Private): A set of encoding rules that allow Application Entities to unambiguously negotiate the encoding techniques (e.g., Data Element structure, byte ordering, compression) they are able to support, thereby allowing these Application Entities to communicate". It has a direct influence on how the Pixel Data Element (7FE0, 0010) shall be used for the exchange of encoded graphical image data. Pixel data may be sent either in a Native (uncompressed) format or in an Encapsulated format (e.g. compressed Encapsulated) defined outside the DICOM standard.

  • If sent in a Native Format, [...] the pixel samples are encoded as the direct concatenation of the bits of each pixel sample, where the number of bits of each sample is defined by the Bits Allocated Data Element Value (0028,0100). The byte ordering in the 2-byte words is defined by one of the Little Endian or Big Endian Transfer Syntaxes.
  • If sent in an Encapsulated Format (i.e. other than the Native Format), [...] the pixel samples are encoded according to the encoding process defined by one of the negotiated Transfer Syntaxes. The encapsulated pixel stream of encoded pixel data is segmented in one or more Fragments which convey their explicit length. This sequence of Fragments is terminated by a delimiter, thus allowing the support of encoding processes where the resulting length of the entire pixel stream is not known until it is entirely encoded. It supports both Single-Frame and Multi-Frame images. DICOM provides a mechanism for supporting the use of JPEG Image Compression through the Encapsulated Format. It defines a number of Transfer Syntaxes which reference the JPEG Standard and provide a number of lossless (bit preserving) and lossy compression schemes.

The following table list most of the Transfer Syntaxes, their associated UID's and description. A mark () will also indicate that the corresponding syntax is used by one of the files available here (along with links to the correspondings files for encapsulated syntaxes, native ones being to numerous). Any new example is welcome.

Basically, the following were "borrowed" from the "Images - medical - sites" section of the Medical Image Format FAQ, (D. Clunie), but some links were old : these are still working, I checked them on 26 Apr. 1999.
